Today we went to the Adoption Administration and Service Center to sign necessary documentation making Kai our son according to the Chinese government. Tuesday, December 13th at 11:02 a.m. Changsha time...Kai Porter Ya Jin Flood became our son...officially! He is the "Fourth Flood". Kai has handled the transition beautifully. He is a happy, friendly boy...an excellent mimic and seems to understand simple communication despite the language barrier. He is often imitating me...and was actually feeding me crackers in the Service Center. He is also strong willed and "stubborn" (how his Nannies describe him). We visited the Center with the Fryday family, who were also finalizing the adoption of their beautiful little girl. They brought their two boys along to experience the journey and as boys do...they had brought along a few toy cars to entertain themselves. While we were waiting our turn to sign the documents, Kai decided to take one of their toy cars and run (Kai has only one speed - wide open)...he slipped, fell and smacked his mouth on the floor. Big tears poured out of his eyes, screams and of course the blood from a busted lip. Lots of blood...people staring...and in of all places...the Adoption Administration office. I was horrified. All is well now...lots of tickles, crackers and dancing later. He is literally, go, go, go. Calls me "bah bah" (Daddy) and when I Skype Melissa, he smiles and says, "mah mah". Apparently, the photos we sent him while he was in foster care helped prepare him. Such a smart little guy. He requests a napkin when his mouth and hands are dirty...he wipes up his mess when he spills his bottle (he watched me do it, now it's a game)...he talks NON-STOP (some sort of mandarin babble) and yet he understood my first request for him to pick up his toy...of course, the music changes when he doesn't get what he wants...real quick, fit, fit, fit...workin' on it.
